Privacy Policy

Last updated: February 2025

Overview

Moniker is a desktop application that runs entirely on your Mac. We built it with privacy as a core principle. This privacy policy explains how we handle (or rather, don't handle) your data.

Data We Collect

Short answer: We don't collect any user data.

Moniker is a local-first application. Here's what that means:

  • No Cloud Processing: All AI models run locally on your Mac. Your files are never uploaded to any server.
  • No Accounts: There's no sign-up, no login, no user accounts. We don't know who you are.
  • No Analytics: The app doesn't include any tracking, analytics, or telemetry. We don't know how you use the app.
  • Minimal Network Requests: Moniker only connects to GitHub to check for version updates. No user data is transmitted during these checks.

AI Model Download

On first launch, Moniker downloads AI models from our servers. During this one-time download:

  • Your IP address is visible to our servers (standard for any download)
  • No personally identifiable information is collected or stored
  • No cookies or tracking mechanisms are used

Version Update Checks

Moniker periodically checks GitHub to see if a newer version is available. During these checks:

  • Only your IP address is visible to GitHub (standard for any web request)
  • No user data, file information, or usage statistics are transmitted
  • The check simply compares version numbers to notify you of updates
  • You can choose whether or not to download updates

Your Files

When you use Moniker to rename files:

  • Files are processed entirely on your Mac
  • File contents are analyzed by local AI models only
  • No file data, metadata, or generated names are transmitted anywhere
  • We have no access to your files, their contents, or what you rename them to

Third-Party Services

Moniker does not use any analytics or tracking tools. The AI models (Moondream 2, Qwen 2.5, Whisper) run locally and do not communicate with external servers.

The only third-party service Moniker connects to is GitHub, solely to check for version updates. GitHub's privacy policy applies to these requests.

Open Source

Moniker is open source. You can review the code yourself to verify these privacy claims. See our GitHub repository.

Changes to This Policy

If we ever change how Moniker handles data (which we don't plan to), we'll update this policy and post the changes here.
